How to measure your lawn for a robot mower
Robot mower ratings are about grass area, not plot size. Here are three ways to measure it, and how to convert between acres, square feet and square metres.
Three ways to measure
- Online map tools. Most map apps can measure an area: trace the edge of your lawn on the satellite view and read the result. Trace each lawn zone separately and add them up.
- Tape measure. Split the lawn into rectangles and triangles, measure each, and add them. A rectangle is length × width; a triangle is half of base × height.
- Property records. Your lot size is a starting point only. Subtract the house, driveway, patio and beds.
Conversions
| Acres | Square feet | Square metres |
|---|---|---|
| ⅛ | 5,445 | 506 |
| ¼ | 10,890 | 1,012 |
| ½ | 21,780 | 2,023 |
| ¾ | 32,670 | 3,035 |
| 1 | 43,560 | 4,047 |
| 1.5 | 65,340 | 6,070 |
| 2.5 | 108,900 | 10,117 |
1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = about 4,047 m².
Leave some headroom
Ratings are maximums. If your lawn uses more than about 85% of a mower's rating, or it has many zones and narrow paths, look at the next size up. The fit calculator flags tight fits.
